On-Record Branding

On-Record Branding is brand work you can hold to account: your buyer's view measured before the work and again at the end, so you can see what changed, and every decision logged as it's made.

This is how the discipline runs at Brandian

1

Before any branding work begins

Everything starts with a reading. The Brand Record measures how your buyer currently sees your brand, through customer survey, share of search, AI visibility and lost-lead research, and puts the result in a document that is yours to keep. Nothing is designed, renamed or rebuilt before this exists, because a result can only ever be shown against a starting point.

Then, before you sign, you and Brandian agree the KPIs the work will be judged on, in writing. They are chosen from what the reading found and from what branding can influence, and they are the numbers the Performance Guarantee is later settled against.

2

While the branding work runs

The build follows: the platform, the identity, the voice, whichever parts the work covers. Every decision is logged as it happens, with its date and its reason. Nothing moves without a stated reason, which keeps every decision strategic and every meeting honest, and the log is yours to read at any time. You are never told the work is going well; you are shown what was done.

3

The five measured months

When the brand work ships, it is half finished. Buyers re-judge brands slowly, so for five further months the measurements continue, drift gets corrected while it is small, and the KPIs are watched as they begin to move. Every service and solution runs nine months end to end for this reason. A firm that stops at the delivery meeting never finds out how buyers responded to its work.

4

The closing reading

At the end of the project, the same reading that opened the work is taken again. The two are set side by side and read back to you in plain terms: what was found, what was done, what changed. The KPIs agreed before signing are checked against the record, and if they were not met, the closing instalment is discounted entirely under the Performance Guarantee. You close the project holding the complete account, so your next decision is made on evidence you own.

The readings are part of every service and solution, never removed to fit a budget. Branding without them is branding off the record, and Brandian does not sell that. And no outcome is ever promised by a date, because buyers set that timetable and honest work says so.

The four-stage method

Before you hire any branding firm

It all comes down to one question you can take anywhere: where is the record? Whichever branding firm you sit down with next, ask whether they take an opening reading before you discuss the work. A firm working on the record will start there without being asked twice. A branding firm that cannot produce one has just answered that your results wouldn't be measured.

Brandian's commitment

Each part of the discipline puts Brandian on the record. The opening measurement comes before any brand work is proposed, and it can show that your brand isn't the problem. The log puts every decision in the open at the moment it's made: nothing changes without a stated reason, so nothing is done on a whim, and weak strategy has nowhere to hide. The closing measurement hands you the means to check the work against the KPIs, met or not.

Brandian invented the discipline, named it, and practises it on every piece of branding it produces.

How most brand work is sold

Most brand work is sold without any of the three parts. No reading is taken before it begins, no log is kept while it runs, and nothing is measured once the work has had time to be judged, which leaves you judging the work on the day it's presented. Off the record is a strange place to keep an investment.

When EACA and Kantar surveyed 141 companies across 22 European markets for the CMOs' Expectations Report 2026, measuring return came out as the weakest-rated agency capability, with 11 per cent of clients saying their agencies do it very well.*

What Clients Think 2026, built on 700 in-depth interviews with clients of UK creative agencies, records the same gap from the client's side: pressure to show effectiveness has intensified, clients find it hard to measure, and they want their agencies to help build the frameworks.** Both studies survey people who already buy this work; the picture among the companies that stopped buying it is unlikely to be kinder.

Where the name comes from

The phrase is borrowed from journalism, where it carries two meanings that both apply. A person speaking on the record can be held to what they said. A publication of record keeps the account that others check against.

Brand work done on the record accepts both: claims you can hold the practitioner to, and an account you can check them against.

On-Record Branding is brand work that keeps an account of itself. Before the work begins, the practitioner takes a reading of how buyers see the brand and writes it down. While the work runs, every decision is logged with its date and its reason. Once the work has had time to be judged, the same reading is taken again, set beside the first, and read back to the client. It is the practitioner who goes on the record, never the client: the record is an account of the work, what was found, what was done and what changed.

A piece of brand work qualifies when all three parts exist. Remove the first reading and no result can ever be shown. Remove the log and nobody can say what was done, when, or why. Remove the final reading and the work simply ends, unexamined. The record is the discipline.
